Subject fundamentals
The course aims at giving some basic knowledge about Hydropower plants.
Expected learning outcomes
Basic ability to design simple hydropower schemes and to understand Hydropower plants operations.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Basic knowledge of Mathematics and Mechanics.
Contents
Fundamentals of hydraulics (32 h):
Properties of fluids, basic equations, forces in static and dynamic conditions, head losses
Design and verification of long pipes
Unsteady flows: analysis of the water hammer effect and design of a piezometric well
Types and functioning of the hydraulic turbines.

Hydropower plants (32 h):
Hydrology: rainfall and runoff; river floods; depth-duration-frequency curves
Hydrology principles and optimal water management
Types of hydropower plants, Impoundment, Diversion and Pumped Storage
Basic principles for hydropower plants design.
Dams and barrages: types and regulations; outline of design principles; intakes, outlets, spillways and energy dissipation structures.
Delivery modes
In addition to lectures, the course programme includes exercise sessions, laboratory applications, visits to the laboratory and visits to existing hydropower installations.
