Subject fundamentals
The Studio, which marks the conclusion of the Master Course before the final dissertation, aims at developing the acquired student’s abilities by means of a project experience: the student will analyse a sub-region, will propose interventions and evaluate their expected effects on landscape. Transdiciplinarity and transcalarity are fundamental approaches. Regional, landscape, environmental and strategic planning are conceived as integrated tools. The contributions to the central theme - Territorial and Landscape Planning - concern Landscape Analysis and Design (including Landscape Ecology) and Mathematical Models for Decisions.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding of heterogeneous paradigms (theoretical and applicative aspects), within a multidisciplinary contexts to support integrated planning and design of the case-study;
Ability to integrate, by autonomous research, the informative pattern required for the characterization of the case-study and for the elaboration of proposals;
Ability to formulate judgements reflecting on social responsibilities linked to territorial strategies and policies;
Ability to represent and communicate the knowledge, the rationale and the proposed scenarios to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Knowledge of territorial analysis methods, knowledge of the institutional framework for territorial government, implementation techniques of spatial planning, ability to use GIS software for territorial analysis and representation, and knowledge of at least written English language. Knowledge of the mathematical principles and tools studied in the first course of mathematics (Calculus) studied in the first year of the degree.
Contents
Landscape planning and natural park planning: objectives, methods, international and national legislative references, case studies. Planning process; landscape characterization and evaluation methods. Landscape and nature conservation, protected assets. Focus on scenic characters of landscape (analysis and regulative measures). Environmental assessment and indicators. Rural Development Policies. Urban landscape, rural landscape, soil consumption and the role of rural development policies and agro-environmental measures. Role of populations, stakeholders and various actors. Landscape masterplans and projects: contents, scales, approaches, examples. Design of open and green spaces, ecosystem services and greening.
Landscape ecology: fields of application, scales, examples. Theories, methods and models for analysis, evaluation and proposal of ecological interventions. Tools for designing and managing multifunctional landscape. Ecosystem services management by means of regional and urban planning technical tools.
Representation and communication of planning proposals.
Definition of mathematical models of evolution, their construction and importance in understanding planning proposals. Definition of systems of differential equations, their equilibrium solutions and the relevant stability analysis. Examples in territorial sciences Applications for the ecological and economical evaluation of an environmental system and of its landscape.
Delivery modes
The Atelier will simulate the process of elaboration of a territorial and landscape plan on a sub-regional area, and, further, will develop a project, focusing on the implementation of the planning directives. The proposal may include a system of planning rules at local level, or a landscape project. The activities are articulated in some phases, introduced by lessons. The process is articulated in three phases: knowledge (description, assessment); strategic framework, quality objectives and scenarios; evaluation, representation and communication. The students work in team, sharing the knowledge and the outcomes of their analyses, and carrying on a common strategic framework, then each team focuses on a different area.
Tutoring, essays and works to be done during the lessons will be done in English for foreign students. Lessons will be in Italian, but slides, specific tutoring and explanations will be given in English. Furthermore, topics of the lessons will be coherent with texts, readings and lecture notes as signalled in the course programme.

Assessment and grading criteria
Evaluation of the interim works that students have prepared during the course, and interaction with the professor while working and in debating the topics of the lessons, will constitute the basis for evaluating the student’s preparation in itinere and towards the final exam.
A specific outcome is expected at the end of each phase of the process. Each team shows its elaboration by written and oral presentation, facing a collective discussion about its proposal, and feedback from the teachers. The exam will consist in a discussion on exercises and on the final essay in which a correct reference to themes of the lessons would be needed. The teachers’ team will express a collective final evaluation during the final examination. Final results, but also frequency, commitment, team working, communication skills may contribute to the final evaluation.
The exam on the part of mathematics consists in presenting a report containing the funamental aspects of the models that have been used and the results concerning the study cases examined.
