Objectives of the course
The course is aimed to give a basic expertise on the concurrent approach to design and production/verification of mechanical components and assemblies in the whole field of the modern production systems (Closed Ring Structure, GD&T/GPS language). The specific syllabus was settled so that to harmonize with the other courses of the degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Expected skills
The students will be expected to be able to fully understand a technical drawing, with dimensional and geometric tolerances, as well as to compute simple functional distances on components. Furthermore, the student will be able to select from catalog the main mechanical components (keys, springs, bearings etc.), as well as to rightly assemble the rolling bearing.
Prerequisites
Technical Communication Methods.
Syllabus
Screw threads, hub-shaft connections, keys, feathers, splines. Welding (process and standard representation). The main common machine components: gears, springs, belts, gearing chains, standard and semplified representation. Bearings and roller bearing: selection and assembly techniques. Analysis of assemblies: stepless speed change gears,, reduction gears, claw clutches, ball joints, bow coupling etc. Basics of GD&T.
Laboratories and/or exercises
The laboratory and the practice are organized in two (sequentially scheduled) parts. First part: GD&T simples techniques of dimensioning and tolerancing of mechanical components and assemblies. Second part: solid, nominal modeling of the components and assemblies.

Revisions / Exam
Individual aided study and post inventory in class and laboratory.
The examination consists in a written proof on the selection/assembly of roller bearings and GD&T dimensioning of mechanical components. Furthermore, an oral discussion on the whole program of the course.
