The course provides the analysis and reconstruction of the vocabulary consolidated by architecture, through texts and buildings, from the antiquity to the contemporary age. Classes will deal with meaning, applications, uses and abuses of the terms: Classic, Gothic, Renaissance, Eclecticism, Order, Type, Ornament, Technique, Internationalisms.
Lessons will adopt a diachronic perspective and will comprehend the reading and commentary of extracts from the texts of Vitruvius, Leon Battista Alberti, Guarino Guarini, Quatremère de Quincy, Eugène Emmanuel Viollet le Duc. They will furthermore tackle the in-depth analysis of buildings such as the Diocletian's palace at Split, the Chartres cathedral and the Malatesta Temple.
Other buildings (such as the London British Museum, the Boston Trinity Church and the Viceroy's House in New Delhi) will be the objects of seminar lessons.
