Expected learning outcomes

By the end of this class, a student shall know active device models, basic analog amplifier topologies and amplifiers using feedback. He or she will understand the effects of feedback on amplifier gain and impedances. After this class a student will be able to analyze simple amplifiers using discrete devices, finding bias point, transfer functions and impedances, by means of a fair number of different analysis tools, both using a simulator and by hand calculation. In addition the students shall be able to use the most common instruments present in a laboratory and to evaluate the instrument uncertainty.
- Find bias point for bjt and mos-based amplifiers
- Calculating the small signal circuit for active devices
- Recognize the feedback topology and evaluate its effects on a circuit
- Find transfer functions and network impedances
- Know the basics of the measurement theory and of the uncertainty propagation according to the deterministic model
- Estimate the uncertainty of a measurement according to the deterministic model.
- Use of the basic laboratory instrumentation
- Use the common laboratory instrumentation
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Circuit theory of linear networks, steady state and transient ciruit analysis. Frequency domain analysis. Physics I and II.
Basic safety rules in a laboratory, fundamentals of measurements, uncertainty propagation according to the deterministic model (20 hrcr)
Specification and use of basic laboratory instrumentation (e.g power supply, digital multimeters, oscilloscopes,') (20 hr)
Large and small signal models for both MOS and BJT (8)

Basic amplifier circuits using MOS and BJTs (8)

Lab exercises on the use of basic instrumentation and uncertainty estimation in typical lab measurements

Assessment and grading criteria
Written test about theory and numerical problem, oral exam. Grade of written part is curved and normalized. Final grade about 50% written test and 50% oral exam.
