Objectives of the course
The module is a basic course on materials science. Starting from the atomic bonding the most important classes of materials are considered. Physical and chemical behaviour as well as main applications are examined.

Bonding: Atomic structure ; The ionic bond; The covalent bond; The metallic bond ; Secondary forces ; Materials - The bonding classification . Crystal Structure: Lattices ; Metal structures ; Ceramic structures ; Polymeric structures; Semiconductor structures ; X-ray diffraction . Non-Crystalline Structures: The solid solution - chemical imperfection - Defects - point, linear, planar; Electron microscopy. Metals: Ferrous alloys ; Nonferrous alloys ; Major mechanical properties. Ceramics and Glasses: Crystalline ceramics; Glasses - Non-Crystalline ceramics; Glass-ceramics; Major mechanical and optical properties. Polymers: Polymerization ; Structural features of polymers ; Thermoplastic polymers ; Thermosetting polymers ; Major mechanical and optical properties.
