Objectives of the course
- Knowledge of meteo-climatic and hydrologic processes
- Capability to evaluate water resources availability in a region
- Ability to identify suitable variables for the evaluation of rainstorm and flood risk
- Knowledge of probabilistic methods for determining design rainfall and flood events.
Expected skills
At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to quantify the rainstorm and flood risk.
Prerequisites
Hydraulics, Probability and statistics.
Syllabus
Module I: PHYSICAL HYDROLOGY
- Introduction
- Physics of the Atmosphere and Meteorology
- Energy balance of water vapour
- Water and soil (vertical balance)
- Geomorphology of the river basins
- Flood formation

Module II: HYDROLOGIC DESIGN
- Basic notions of probability and statistics
- Design Rainfall estimation
- Design Flood estimation
Laboratories and/or exercises
- Group and individual work at the computer lab
- -Solutions as hard (paper) copies assembled and presented at the final exam
