Subject fundamentals
The course addresses the issues and the basic tools of the sociology of communication, with an emphasis on digital media. The references and conceptual framework of the course is Communication and Media Studies. The educational objectives are: knowledge acquisition and analysis tools capable of reading the complex processes of the digital media within the society, linking technological innovations with the social and cultural transformations of the contemporary world.
Expected learning outcomes
This course enables students to acquire the knowledge and the tools of analysis of Communication and Media Studies, in particular allowing the student critical thinking skills compared to digital communication in relation to the social and cultural transformations.
In detail, during the course the student will acquire:
- Understanding of the historical evolution of communication
- Knowledge of the main Sociology of communication’s terms and vocabulary.
- Ability to analyze communication processes in relation to social and cultural transformations
- Ability to analyze the digital cultural interfaces
- Ability to share resources and ideas

The course is organized in different teaching modules :

A. Communication. Masters and paradigms
1 ) Communication and culture: Orality and Writing, Language and Signs, Media Science.
2 ) The media in society: Communication and politics, mass communication and mass society.
3 ) Technology, communication and networks: machines, Hypertext, Internet.
4) The digital society: Digital media against the mass media, digital networks.

B. Lecturers on some key authors of Media Studies
Marshall McLuhan; Henry Jenkins; Sherry Turkle; Manuel Castells.

C. The language of new media and creativity
Topics: the principles of new media; cultural interfaces; digital operations; database logic.

D. The frontiers of digital communication
Topics: Interactivity and digital artistic languages: Officine Sintetiche project; the world of interaction design applied to the communication; the digital fabrication and makers community: the Fablabs ; creativity and new professions.
Delivery modes
The course consists of 60 hours of lectures and 40 hours of tutorials, seminars, meetings with experts, external visits, with the goal of leading the student to direct confrontation with some innovative projects of the territory that operate in the sector of digital communication.

Oral exam, with the possibility of written test on one of the modules.
