Subject fundamentals
The course addresses the issues and the basic tools of the sociology of communication, with an emphasis on digital media. The references and conceptual framework of the course is Communication and Media Studies. The educational objectives are: knowledge acquisition and analysis tools capable of reading the complex processes of the digital media within the society, linking technological innovations with the social and cultural transformations of the contemporary world.

Expected learning outcomes
This course enables students to acquire the knowledge and the tools of analysis of Communication and Media Studies, in particular allowing the student critical thinking skills compared to digital communication in relation to the social and cultural transformations.
In detail, during the course the student will acquire:
- Understanding of the historical evolution of communication
- Knowledge of the main Sociology of communication’s terms and vocabulary.
- Ability to analyze communication processes in relation to social and cultural transformations
- Ability to analyze the digital cultural interfaces
- Ability to share resources and ideas
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Are not required prior knowledge
The course is organized in three different teaching modules :

A. Communication. Masters and paradigms
Topics: Communication and culture, The media in the society, Technologies of communication and networks, The digital society.

B. The language of new media and creativity
Topics: the principles of new media; cultural interfaces; digital operations and visual languages.

C. The frontiers of digital communication
Topics: Interactivity and digital artistic languages; Officine Sintetiche project; Interaction design applied to the communication.
Delivery modes
The course consists of lectures, seminars and laboratory (to learn and to apply software for realtime processing ISADORA).

Assessment and grading criteria
For attending students final evaluation is composed by:
Oral exam (weight 70%), with the possibility of written test on one of the modules and evaluation of the project/excercises realized during ISADORA laboratory (weight 30%).

Oral exam questions assess the knowledge and understanding of the concepts outlined during the course and contained in the bibliography, the ability to reproduce media analysis language, and, finally, the ability to analyze a media product.
The ISADORA lab evaluates the knowledge of basic software tools, the understanding software logic and its uses, and the ability to prototype a creative interactive action.

For non attending students:
Evaluation of the oral exam focused on the books indicated in the bibliography for non-attending students.
