Objectives of the course
- The course provides students with a basic culture on fundamentals of Electromagnetism and Wave phenomena, together with the ability of distinguishing between models and phenomena, and of applying physical models and mathematical concepts to practical problems in engineering science.
Prerequisites
It is necessary to know and to be able to apply:
- the vector analysis;
- the differential and integral calculus (including line, surface and volume integrals);
- the subjects and the methods introduced in the course of Physics 1.
Syllabus
ELECTROMAGNETISM
Electrostatics: Electric charge ' Charge conservation ' Coulomb's law ' Electrostatic field and potential. Comparison with gravitational field ' Charge distributions ' Electric dipole ' Gauss' law ' Capacitance and condensers ' Isotropic dielectrics ' Energy and energy density of the electric field '
Direct current: intensity and current density ' Ohm's law ' Electrical resistance ' Conductors, insulators and semiconductors ' Joule effect.
Magnetostatics: The magnetic field - Lorentz force ' Magnetic field generated by a direct current ' Biot & Savart law ' Laplace laws ' Ampère law of magnetic circulation ' Hall effect ' Magnetic field in matter.
Electric- and magnetic field as a function of time: Electromotive forces and induced currents ' Self-induction ' RL-circuit - Magnetic field energy and energy density ' LC oscillating circuit ' Displacement current ' Maxwell's equations
WAVE PHENOMENA
Fundamentals of wave propagation - Unidimensional electromagnetic waves ' Energy and momentum of a wave ' Poynting vector ' Geometrical optics: Reflection and refraction
Physical optics: Light and electromagnetic waves ' Polarization ' Dispersion ' Interference ' Fraunhofer diffraction.
Laboratories and/or exercises
Exercise classes integrated with lessons. In the lab, student groups perform two experiments, working out the data

Revisions / Exam
Two compulsory tests: the first one, as a threshold; the second one (written), upon theory and application. Oral test optional, if the two previous tests have been overcome
