Objectives of the course
This course provides the basics for understanding the most important computer networks and their protocols. Particular emphasis is given to internet and the most popular application protocols.
Expected skills
The student will understand how internet and the most important protocols work.
Basic principles of both computer architecture and programming are required. It is also expected that the students are acquainted with the basic principles of physics.
 Taxonomy and most important functionalities of computer networks.
 Internet architecture.
Classic application layer protocols
 This part describes the most important protocols for non realtime applications (e.g. HTTP, FTP, Telnet).
Transport layer protocols
 Basic principles of error recovery techniques
 How TCP and UDP work
Network layer protocols
 IP and ICMP protocols (both version 4 and 6)
 Basic principles of routing
 Routing in internet (RIP, OSPF and EGP)
Protocols for realtime applications
 Requirements of real time applications
 Protocols for audio/video streaming (RTSP)
 Protocols for realtime transmission (RSVP, RTP, SIP)
 Symmetric key and public key cryptography
 Authentication protocols
 Digital signatures and certificates
 Firewalls
Laboratories and/or exercises
The course include activities in the laboratory, which is devoted to make the student acquainted with tools for protocol analysis, and the configuration of some important application (e.g. firwall, routing tables).
