Objectives of the course
The course is aimed at giving basis on materials for engineering, in particular the relationships between material microstructure and properties will be presented.
Expected skills
Knowledge of effect of chemical composition and microstructure on the main properties of materials. Capability of selecting proper materials in the design of devices for different applications.

Basis of chemistry, physics and mathematics
Syllabus
The lectures of Materials science and technology, as in the case of every basic course of material science designed for students of industrial engineering, are focused at giving a wide overview of the behaviour of materials and the microstructural features affecting the material performance. The main subjects that will be discussed are listed in the following; some further information concerning peculiar characteristic of this course are presented in the next section.
- Microstructure of crystalline and amorphous materials. Bravais lattices. Defects in crystalline solids (vacancy, dislocations etc.). Solid solutions.
- Diffusion in solids. Processes of nucleation and growth.
- Mechanical behaviour of materials: elastic and plastic deformation; dislocations and plastic deformation mechanisms.
- Properties of materials: mechanical, thermal, electrical etc. Methods for material characterization and mechanical testing. Dependence of material properties from temperature and time.
- Improvement of material properties through microstructure modification: phase transformations and thermal treatments. Two-components phase diagrams. Temperature-time-transformation curves.
- Introduction to lifetime and degradation of materials.

The lectures of Material science and technology given for students of Chemical, Material and Electric Engineering also integrate knowledge about:
- metallic alloys, polymers and ceramics and their suitability for different application fields.
Laboratories and/or exercises
In addition to traditional lectures, that are oriented to face practical problems too, other activities will be performed by using computer and video facilities.
These last activities will be scheduled and updated each year, the teachers will inform the students about it.
