Subject fundamentals
The course, semi-compulsory for the Master of Science in Management Engineering, provides the basic skills required to manage projects in both manufacturing and service industries.
The course objectives are as follows:
' present the fundamental techniques to effectively manage projects and risks throughout the project life-cycle,
' understand the linkages of those techniques to economic implications,
' select the appropriate organizational models for project-based companies,
' learn about the most used contracting arrangement for construction projects,
' adapt and apply the project management framework to various industries, through practical seminars and hands-on case studies
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students are expected to have acquired knowledge in the following fields:
' project planning, scheduling, monitoring, and control methods,
' ability to use quantitative techniques for project management,
' economic assessment,
' contracting modes applicable to diverse project types,
' usage of project management software tools (such as MSProject)
' capability to work as part of a team member to produce an educational-purposed practical project
Concerning the future application in the professional life of the acquired knowledge, at the end of the course, the student will have taken the methodological skills for independently managing a project for an organization providing products or services.
Introduction to project management. 6h
Project Feasibility & Organization. Project organization involves evaluating possible projects, selecting contracting type, including a payment scheme, selection method, and delivery type. A critical issue of this phase of the project is the handling of uncertainty and risk in projects. 10h
Project Planning & Scheduling. Project planning involves establishing the Work Breakdown Structure, mapping this structure to the established OBS/CBS budget and setting a schedule using various techniques such as Critical Path Method (CPM), or Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT). 10h
Project Monitoring & Control. Project Monitoring refers to the configuration and metrics used to monitor the progress of a project throughout its life. Earned Value Analysis is one project management tool used to help answer these questions. Reports are based on the organization and reporting structure established previously. Based on the information gathered through the Project Monitoring system, corrective action may be required to keep a project on track. 10h

Project Learning. Project Learning is recognized by organizations as one of the most important factors for success in current and future projects. A valuable methodology used in recent years for managing learning is simulation. In this course we will introduce the System Dynamics simulation methodology for evaluating certain performance parameters of a project. 4h
Case studies presentation and discussion 16h
Total: 60 hrs
Delivery modes
A long term project will be developed in small groups. The work is aimed at preparing a commercial prososal for the development of a complex project based on specification provided during the class. This requires planning, scheduling, risk evaluation, simulation of cash flow out of price determination, and selection of contract provisions.

Assessment and grading criteria
Final grading comprises both long-term project evaluation, a final written text, and a optional oral exam.
Small groups will be graded based on a class competition. Student grading might differentiate based on individual participation to the team project.
The written text is composed of both exercise and problem sets.
