Objectives of the course
The aim of the course is to supply to the students the fundamental acquaintances concerning the operation and the use of the main electrical machines
Expected skills
Understanding of the phenomena on which the electrical and electromechanical energy conversion is based.
Acquiring of the tools necessary to quantitatively estimate the behavior of electrical machines.
General knowledge of the norms and of the main applications.
General considerations on the concept of electrical machine. The role the electrical machines carry out in the industrial world.
Constructive solutions.
Basic theory of the transformer.
Equivalent circuit and main parameters. Behavior of monophase and triphase transformers in the main applications.

D.C. machines
Bases of the electromechanical energy conversion.
Constructive principles of D.C. machine.
Electromechanical characteristics.
Different machine types and their applications.

A.C. machines
Principle of rotating magnetic field. Rotating vector theory.

Asynchronous machine
Constructive aspects and principle of operation. Equivalent circuits i and main properties.
Electromechanical characteristics and vector diagrams.
Main regulations and applications.

Synchronous machine
Constructive typologies and principle of operation. Machine equations and equivalent circuits. Electromechanical characteristics and vector diagrams.
Alternator and motor operations.
Laboratories and/or exercises
The course includes the following practical activities:
laboratory activities, consisting measuring
sessions in order to characterize the different machines;
activity of processing of the experimental results according to the IEC directives.
