Objectives of the course
The module is intended to provide the base knowledge necessary to design and dimension main components of machines and mechanisms, emphasising their integration within complex mechanical systems. Some concepts related to the resistance of construction materials in the presence of dynamic, thermal and fatigue stresses will be taught.
Expected skills
Students are expected to gain knowledge related to the design procedures of main machine components, with particular reference to the automotive applications, taking into consideration the various types of stresses (missions) and the interaction of components with other parts of the machine (system).
Prerequisites
Knowledge of the content of the following modules is required:
Strength and Mechanical behaviour of materials, Applied mechanics, Fundamentals of motor vehicle design.
Syllabus
Strength of Materials
- Review of equivalent stress calculation formulas and failure criteria
- Review of the strength of construction materials with respect to fatigue, stress concentration, damage and damage accumulation
- Behaviour of construction materials subjected to dynamic loads, temperature changes, creep
- Introduction to fracture mechanics
Mechanical connections
- Connections with threaded fasteners and screws
- Hub to shaft fixture by interference assemblage
- Connections with mating splines and shaft keys
- Welded joints ' arc welding and spot welding
Machine components and their design
- Drive shafts
- Rigid, flexible and articulated couplings, Cardan and omocinetic joints
- Torsion bars, helical springs, beam and leaf springs, conical disc springs
- Friction clutches
- The Hertz theory for the calculation of contact stresses, strength of materials to contact loads and problems of wear
- Rolling-element bearings, catalogue selection, life prediction, mounting
- Spur gears and helical gears: tooth geometry, sliding coefficients, bending and Hertz contact strength.
- Tooth cutting with shifted profiles and correction factor choice.
Laboratories and/or exercises
Students will solve exercises in the classroom covering the topics dealt with during lectures.
Students will be asked to develop at home a simple project, covering the design of automotive sub-assembly.

Revisions / Exam
