Subject fundamentals
The course will address the fundamentals of dynamic systems analysis and of the design of simple control architectures.
Expected learning outcomes
  • Knowledge of the concept of dynamic system together with its mathematical representations such as state variables and input-output models.
  • Skill in deriving mathematical models of dynamic systems.
  • Skill in computing the time response of a dynamic system.
  • Evaluation of the dynamic system behaviour through numeric simulations.
  • Knowledge of the feedback control concept of a dynamic systems.
  • Skill in designing simple feedback control systems.
  • Evaluation of behaviour and performances of a controlled systems through numeric simulation and/or experimental tests.

The ability to apply the gained knowledge will be verified through class and lab exercises.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
  • Differential and integral calculus of vector valued real functions.
  • Basic concepts of systems physics.
  • Fundamental results and tools on complex numbers and complex functions.
  • Laplace transform.
  • Basics on linear algebra, polynomials and rational functions.
  • Matlab basic skill.
Contents
Course topics:
  • Analysis tools review (6 hours).
  • Dynamic systems modelling and representations (15 hours).
  • Dynamic systems analysis in the time and frequency domains (9 hours).
  • Control specifications (6 hours).
  • Control systems and controller design (15 hours).
  • Technological aspects of the control systems: devices and digital controllers (9 hours).
Delivery modes
Exercises are related to the topics of the lectures and to the development of application examples. Some exercises are carried out in laboratory with the use of the Matlab operating environment (with the related toolboxes).
