The contents include methods and techniques related to the media, and the tools for analysing the technological, social and economic processes to design and position the media product. The programme syllabus has a well-balanced distribution of specific skills needed for computer science (e.g. multimedia environments and technologies and virtual reality), for the field of cinema, media and new media (design, production, post-production, communication and evaluation of multimedia, audiovisual and cross-media projects), for economics and marketing (marketing and communication strategies in new contexts of digital production, with particular attention to the market for cinematographic, audiovisual, digital entertainment and online communication products) along with necessary additions from a variety of technological fields (special effects, sound engineering, immersive cinema). There will also be laboratories and practical work experience, and the opportunity to do the thesis background work at a Polytechnic research laboratory or at an external company interested in the project.

The main objective of the MSc degree in Cinema and Media Engineering is to train engineers who can meet the needs of the new entrepreneurial contexts in the media sector. A figure with advanced skills in cinema and media technologies and languages and with the skills necessary for following the various stages of the digital chain: from conception of the multimedia product to its placement on the market. The engineer specialized in Cinema and Media Engineering combines highly technological expertise in ICT (Information Communication Technologies) with methodological knowledge of systems concerning the world of film, media and technologies for creating, processing and transferring information. The aim is to train a professional who can synergistically manage all aspects of complex media systems and interact with all the actors involved: figures highly specialized in technology, creators and innovators, marketing analysts. The specific objectives of the training are to form a cinema and media engineer who can:
- create audiovisual, cinematographic and multimedia products to be used online and offline, e.g. documentaries, advertising clips and commercials, video musicals, television productions (also for web channels);
- manage all phases of the digital product chain;
- analyse and understand user needs, conceive ideas, develop strategies capable of integrating experiences and knowledge of marketing and communication to achieve a specific objective;
- design Web applications and develop a complex Internet project;
- bring expertise to the various phases of the elaboration and transmission of audio signals, such as the acquisition, registration, codification, compression, transmission, and elaboration of sound in multimedia and musical productions (TV, cinema, advertising, but also interactive communication);
- design and create 2D and 3D computer graphic applications, computer animation, Virtual Reality;
- design and develop applications related to online and offline gaming.
During the two years there will also be practical hands-on sessions in which the students can use the acquired knowledge and skills to analyse and develop projects in the digital media field.

Graduates in Cinema and Media Engineering find employment not only in large companies, but also in medium and small ones requiring an increasing concentration of specific expertise in the world of the digital economy. Graduates can offer skills that cross various sectors: technological (communication media engineer); communication (elaboration of contents for different media), economic (management of production processes); marketing and advertising of cinematographic and multimedia products. This professionalism is of interest to large communication, advertising, and production firms; for small companies operating in the technology or graphics sector, which see digital media as a tool for innovation and dynamism; to local public authorities. The graduate is able to manage all phases of digital production, from conception and design, to the implementation and market positioning of multimedia products, particularly cross-media forms of communication (supporting communication through various platforms) and in the innovative areas of interactive and immersive media in great development (AR, VR, immersive cinema).
The course is closely linked to the working world and involves the collaboration of numerous companies operating in the fields of research technology, multimedia design, the world of media, entertainment, art and culture.

The Study program qualifies the following professional profile/s: Roles and skills:
