The objective of the degree course is to train students to become construction engineers, teaching them the necessary skills and functions to perform that role competently. This engineer works mainly in the field of building design, in its realization in traditional and industrialised construction sites, both for new constructions and the recovery of existing buildings; in real estate management and organisation; in managing and organising the construction process with regard to materials, products and components; and surveying and assessing the built heritage.
The construction engineer is aware of the complexity of the construction system, in relation with its subsystems and with the environmental context, and has the skills to manage it.

The programme is structured over three years.
In the first year students students learn the basic language of engineering, including courses in mathematics, chemistry and physics, to which is added a teaching characterizing the course of the studies.
The second year prepares students in languages and construction technologies (historical and innovatives) that are the basics of construction engineering.
The third year focuses on construction engineering applications, especially in the areas of design, implementation and monitoring, also with a design application common to the different teachings.

Training can be completed with activities organized by students' teams, under the guidance of teachers. Activities are supported by contributions of the Politecnico di Torino

Courses in the basics of engineering are organised into three groups: mathematical analysis, physics, and chemistry, and are taught during the first year and the first part of the second.
Courses in the basics of construction engineering are organised into three groups: representation and surveying; technical architecture, materials technology, technical physics and systems; construction science and technology, and geotechnics.
Courses related to construction engineering applications are organised into three groups: digital modelling; building design, architectural heritage; building production; economic assessment.

The construction engineer is aware of the complexity of the construction system, in relation with its subsystems and with the environmental context, and has the skills to manage it.

The construction engineer with a BSc degree collaborates in designing complex projects and independently designs simple projects, according to the professional constraints established by current legislation.
Professional activities, which involve liability towards third parties, can only be undertaken after passing the state exam and enrolling in the Order of Engineers, in section B (junior engineer).
These professionals find employment primarily in assisting with construction design and in managerial, organisational and construction activities in public and private technical offices, in construction companies, and in engineering firms.

The Study program qualifies the following professional profile/s: Roles and skills:
Building engineer qualified for design, implementation, maintenance and management of building developments.   JOB ROLES:
A graduate in Building Engineering that has passed the required State exam and has registered in the Part B list of the Association of Engineers may work within corporations, companies, private and public institutions or as freelance consultants. Registration with the professional Association allows the graduate to sign project or verification documents and to take responsibility for their content.
The characteristics of the engineering profession are indicated in the Presidential Decree n. 328 dated 5 June 2001, published in the ordinary supplement to the "Gazzetta Ufficiale" (Official Gazette), No. 190 dated 17 August 2001.
In particular, the degree graduates in this profile are technical professionals who are able to collaborate in the integrated design of an architectural structure from the first project proposal to its full construction, and its related maintenance. They can therefore be employed for building design in technical departments of public and private companies and building construction companies.

SKILLS RELATED TO THE ROLE:
The skills are listed in Art. 46 paragraph 3 of Presidential Decree No. 328 dated 5 June 2001 for the "Civil and Environmental" sector and include:
- plan and direct the work of construction or civil engineering sites, in accordance with the law
- planning and coordinating the on-site safety, with consequent permit to operate in safety as per Legislative Decree 81/2008 and subsequent changes, if the optional course in "Safety on construction site" has been chosen and completed;
- perform tests and audit the standards, the functionality and the safety of the structures
- perform static calculations for simple reinforced concrete works, with the use of standardized methodologies
- prepare specifications lists for tenders
- manage ordinary and emergency maintenance of buildings and civil works
- liaise with clients, workforce, colleagues and institutions

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:
The BSc trained Building engineer helps with the design of works, including complex ones, and can design simple works independently, and in conformity with the law.
Any professional activity, entailing responsibilities towards third parties, may begin after registration with the Association of Engineers, in section B (junior engineer), after passing the State exam.
This professional figure is employed mainly for support activities to design and construction, and in general in any management, organizational and construction activity within public and private technical departments, construction companies and engineering firms.

In particular, the Building engineering graduate in this profile is a technical professional who can independently manage survey and modelling of an architectural structure, carry out real estate evaluation and deal with construction economics. The graduate can also collaborate in the planning of restoration and renovation works on existing constructions and evaluate the impact with the surrounding environment as a result of any new building insertions. The typical workplaces are construction companies, real estate and consulting companies, and public offices. This job activity can be carried out both as an employee and as a freelance in public and private technical design offices.

The degree program is presented in four learning areas. The first relates to basic scientific training in mathematics, chemistry and physics; the second concerns general engineering in the construction sector; the third approaches the specific engineering training needed in building engineering; the fourth and final area, fine tunes the training by putting it into context and cross relation.
