Professional profile

A graduate in Motor Vehicle Engineering is a technician who works with motor vehicles. He/She deals with design and production technologies besides managing production processes. He/She also deals with human resources, economy and business organization, quality management and check, marketing, environment and security.
Qualifying aspects
A motor vehicle is a high complexity device, whose performance depends on the quality of the process, production technologies, materials and electronic components. A graduate in Motor Vehicle Engineering has technical knowledge and skills in managing industrial and commercial processes.
Job opportunities
A graduate in Motor Vehicle Engineering can be employed:

  • in industries that produce motor vehicles;
  • in industries that produce components for motor vehicles;
  • in companies that design motor vehicles and their components;
  • in labs and research centers for motor vehicles.
    The market in which graduates may work will probably include international experiences, because of globalization of the motor vehicle market.
    The wide range of skills acquired, give him/her the opportunity to work in a lot of other fields which may also be complex.

    Course structure

    The aim of this course is to develop technicians with an in depth knowledge of building features and technologies for motor vehicles. They can, after the training, plan and design projects, develop competitive products, perform research in the field of motor vehicles and manage industrial and commercial projects.
    This is made possible because of the presence of professors from outside academia who constitute 20% of the total.
    This curriculum gives solid basic education and focusses on main engineering topics. During the I year some professional topics are studied and thanks to visits to installations and labs, students can understand the complexity of the motor vehicle world.
    Chemistry, physics, technology of materials, mechanical technology, computer science, languages labs are arranged at the Lingotto. Other activities take place in the Politecnico and in companies or research centers.
    Further activities
    Only 120 students every year can attend this course, after having passed a test.
    This degree course is the only one of its kind in Italy, Europe and outside Europe where there is no other program completely dedicated to motor vehicles.
    The Lingotto, where lectures and labs take place, is new and has the most modern equipments; there is also a secretariat.

    Final exam

    The final exam consists of the public discussion of a dissertation or a written thesis. The final assesment of the student is a combination of the average score obtained through all courses attended during his/her academic period plus the score of his/her final exam.

    Master of Science (Laurea specialistica)

    After the Bachelor (Laurea di I livello)it is possible to enter the Master of Science (Laurea specialistica) in Motor Vehicle Engineering.
    Master of Science Degree in Motor Vehicle Engineering
    The aim of the course is to develop graduates with an in depth knowledge of functional features of motor vehicles and production technologies. He/She always has an eye on innovation, competitiveness of products and international development of companies, that can contribute to the managing of integrated systems. A graduate constantly updating himself can coordinate with these techniques research, development and planning activities and manage technical care.
    To achieve the above mentioned there are professors coming from industry; the education is technical and scientific and gives all the skills required to plan and perform research in the field of motor vehicles.
    Basic scientific topics are studied in depth and skills oriented towards being competitive in the market are developed.
    The market in which graduates may work will probably include international experiences, because of globalization of the motor vehicle market.
    The I year is common, while the II has three possible divisions: Development of Propulsion Systems, Development of Systems for Vehicles and Production Processes. Each curriculum includes a training in a firm and a written work (tesi).
    It is possible that the amount of areas of specialization will increase in the following years, according to the needs of the market.
    All graduates between December 2004 and February 2005 have already found a job.


    Why should I study Motor Vehicle Engineering? Planning and production of motor vehicles will require, in the following years, a great number of specialized technicians.
    After the Bachelor's Degree in Motor Vehicle Engineering is it possible to enter the Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or another Master of Science in Enginering)? Yes, it is possible, but requires making up the necessary credits in that area, which can change according to the Master of Science.
    Is this the right course if I want to design motor vehicles? This course is not focused on motor vehicle design, but it is possible that a specialized curriculum or Master will soon be avaliable.
    If I don't pass the initial test can I enter the course subsequently? It is possible but only if some places are free (for example if some students leave the course). New admissions follow the ranking of students and the bound is always 120 students per year. The credits already obtained in the courses attended before will be recognized for these students.
