 Educational objectives

The programme can be divided into three interconnected areas :
- basic scientific training, with teaching modules in mathematics, chemistry, physics and computer science;
- basic engineering training for industry, with input from various areas (technical design, applied physics, electrical engineering and electrical machinery, materials, applied mechanics, structural mechanics, fluid mechanics, testing and measurements);
- specific training in mechanical engineering, in planning and design of machines, thermal and fluid machinery, production technologies, and industrial plant and equipment.
The programme also provides some elective teaching modules (12 credits); students may choose from context subjects, specialised technical and managerial studies, or an internship.
As established by the Academic Senate, students are required to obtain the English language IELTS certificate with a score of at least 5 or an equivalent certification, valid for 3 CFU.
The programme ends with a final test, which is awarded 3 credits.
The first year is devoted mainly to basic scientific training.
In the second year, in addition to completion of basic sciences, there will be teaching units in basic engineering.
The third year will be dedicated to completing the engineering background, and specific mechanical engineering topics will be addressed.
The course is taught both in Italian and English.
Starting fron the a.y. 2015/16, only for the Italian course, it was activated a special "Textile" programme which completes the standard mechanical course with specific competencies for the textile industrial field.

The BSc course in Mechanical Engineering is aimed at training a professional figure with a solid technical background in areas related to industrial engineering and specific expertise in mechanical engineering, with a focus on basic concepts and methodological aspects.
More specifically the programme is intended to provide:
- knowledge of the physical and chemical background as well as mathematical and informatic tools for engineering applications;
- knowledge of basic techniques and methodologies used in industrial engineering;
- a good level of knowledge and skills in specific areas of mechanical engineering: materials, design methods, thermo-fluid dynamics, fluid and heat machines, production technologies, industrial equipment and related technical services;
- ability to work independently and collaborate effectively even in interdisciplinary working groups;
- ability to interface, using appropriate technical language and knowledge of basic concepts, with specialists from other engineering fields;
- ability to deal with change, and strong motivation to stay abreast of new developments and adapt to various industrial situations.
Achieving these objectives will enable graduates to continue their studies with an adequate background, or to integrate quickly into the workplace by virtue of their capacity to continuously upgrade their skills and adapt to various professional contexts.
Graduates in Mechanical Engineering will find a wide range of employment opportunities, with various functions, mainly in:
- companies specialising in designing and producing mechanical and electromechanical components and systems;
- manufacturing and processing firms that use mechanical, metallurgical and electromechanical production systems;
- companies and public utilities for energy conversion;
- plant and equipment manufacturers;
- service and industrial consulting firms;
- public bodies with technical functions.

Junior Mechanical Engineer, product design and maintenance officer   JOB ROLES:

He/she works as part of the team on the design and maintenance of mechanical components and systems - both for the static elements and dynamic elements for the movement of materials and people - on the modeling and detailed design of components and assemblies of medium complexity and on the choice of suitable components and subsystems. Works, within his job role, on failure analysis.

SKILLS RELATED TO THE ROLE:

Main skills:
- functional design of systems and mechanical assemblies of medium complexity, with evaluation of the applied loads;
- sizing and choice of appropriate materials; verification of mechanical parts and assemblies based on the applied stresses;
- use of programs to perform static stress analysis on finished parts
- analysis of stress and material characteristics that led to failure, in failure analysis
- use of software tools for 3D modelling and management of associated documents.

Junior mechanical engineer, design and process officer   JOB ROLES:

Collaborates in the selection and review of the processes and methods of production and design, implementation and maintenance of the equipment needed to complete the process.

SKILLS RELATED TO THE ROLE:

- choice of the technologies and the means of implementation of treatment processes, machining and assembly in order to achieve the desired product characteristics;
- design of equipment needed to complete the process;
- definition of the production cycles of the individual parts in metal and polymer materials.

Junior Mechanical Engineer, production officer   JOB ROLES:

Cooperates in the management of the production systems and methods, and evaluates the productivity of the processes. Evaluates the products in their quality aspects with the appropriate parameters and in their characteristics with statistical analyses.

SKILLS RELATED TO THE ROLE:

- definition of the single production process timing and optimisation of the production equipment's performance;
- definition of experimental plans for the quality evaluation of the product.
- definition of the product measurement methods, in particular for size and resistance, and statistical analysis of the results;
- definition of the necessary tests for failure analysis.
- analysis of production system malfunctions and failures
- definition and management of control and maintenance plans.

Junior Mechanical Engineer, industrial plant design and maintenance officer   JOB ROLES:

Helps in the design and general maintenance of industrial facilities, including the dimensioning of the technical services, and the definition of the layout and internal logistics of factories and production plants of medium complexity.

SKILLS RELATED TO THE ROLE:

- general layout design of an industrial factory, choice of warehouses and means used to move semi-finished products;
- definition of internal logistics;
- dimensioning of technical and distribution machinery in a factory.

Design and maintenance departments in Industrial Companies and Service Companies.
 
Junior Mechanical Engineer, industrial plant management officer   JOB ROLES:

Helps run the factory logistics and plants, with particular attention to safety issues.
Cooperates in the direction and management of production systems and conversion of energy.

SKILLS RELATED TO THE ROLE:

- management of internal logistics of industrial plants and technical installations of a plant
- management of plant and machinery maintenance;
- energy, economic and environmental performance assessments of electromechanical fluid machines, thermal and hydraulic systems deemed to be most appropriate for use
- occupational safety management, even with full accountability

Junior mechanical engineer technical sales services officer   JOB ROLES:

Collaborates with technical-commercial institutions and companies for the procurement of materials, semi-finished products, parts and mechanical systems and technical support services for the commercial companies, including the installation and testing of products.

SKILLS RELATED TO THE ROLE:

- selection and technical evaluation of materials, semi-finished products and parts necessary for production;
- on site customer product installation and overhaul management.
