The MSc programme in Electrical Engineering allows students to deepen their knowledge related to electrical systems for energy and for industrial automation, creating a professional figure with specific and exclusive competences in the field of electrical engineering.
The programme is structured to form a clearly identified professional figure with extensive expertise in all areas of application of electricity, who can interact effectively with operators in other technical/engineering and economic/organisational fields. Particular importance is given to technologies, safety, quality of products and services, control and reliability of components and systems, economic aspects and interactions with energy networks and the environment. This fosters a degree of versatility that provides the graduate with diverse opportunities in the labor market.
The programme begins with instruction in applications of electromagnetism and of mechanical and electromechanical technologies. On this foundation, students investigate electric drives, systems for producing electricity and the combined production of different energy vectors, and systems for the transport of electricity over large transmission networks. This is followed by content on energy conversion through the use of power electronics, control of converters and drives, distribution and use of electricity, the economics of electrical energy, and competitive management of electrical systems in the electricity market and other energy markets. Students attend lectures, participate in individual or group training activities where specific problems are identified, discussed and solved, and conduct laboratory activities where they have an opportunity to use real equipment, devices and systems.
The programme includes some free choice, so that students can explore specific content within the university┐s course offering, for example regarding design of components and electrical systems and advanced applications of electricity in specific areas. Alternatively, students may diversify their education by taking elective courses drawn from other fields of science, engineering or economics, or by undertaking training activities in companies or institutions with which the university has established agreements.
The training concludes with the preparation and discussion of the final examination (thesis), in which students integrate their knowledge and put their skills to the test. The thesis may be theoretical, applicative and/or experimental and must contain the student┐s original input. The thesis may be undertaken at the university, or at external public or private institutions in Italy or abroad with which cooperative agreements have been established.
For students interested in activities abroad there are active agreements with universities in other countries, whereby students may undertake periods of study and/or thesis preparation in collaboration with local contacts. In some cases, programmes may lead to a double degree.

Typical employment opportunities of the MSc graduate in Electrical Engineering are found in sectors dealing with the study, design, manufacturing and operation of both traditional and innovative components and systems that use electricity. Graduates can be employed: in large power producing companies, in companies that manage even small size electricity production systems, in companies that produce systems for energy conversion, in industry, in transportation and in services. Other important openings for graduates can be either freelance consultancy (after passing the State exam and registering as Engineers in section A) or within research in national and international Universities and research centres. Graduates may also teach in secondary schools, once they have followed the necessary qualification procedures (the access to these may require completion of further training, and a public examination, based on the existing rules and regulations).

The Study program qualifies the following professional profile/s: Roles and skills:
Professional Engineer (requires that the graduate passes a State Exam in the section A)  JOB ROLES:
Graduates in Electrical Engineering who pass the State exam and enrol in the Register of Engineers in section A, can provide consultancy services to firms, companies, private organizations and public authorities or to other organizations.
The characteristics of the consultant engineer are provided in the President of the Republic's Decree n. 328, dated 5th June 2001, particularly under art.46 paragraph 2 (section A list of activities).

SKILLS:
Signs off technical and project documentation.
According to the list of skills described in section A of the industrial sector (Art. 46 paragraph 1b) relating to the electricity sector, the consultant electrical engineer:
- Designs industrial and civil electrical power installations;
- Checks the application of the principles of safety in electrical applications and the related laws and regulations;
- Designs electrical machines, control systems of electric drives and of electronic power converters;
- Deals with the direction and management of works, estimation, testing and maintenance of complex or innovative electrical systems;
- Defines and designs standards and procedures related to the operation and safety of electricity power generation and distribution systems.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:
The professional opportunities for a Section A consultant in the electricity sector are plenty and quite diversified. The electrical engineer can perform different types of activities in the following areas:
- electrical energy, electricity production and power plants;
- electricity transmission and distribution;
- distributed and renewable generation of electricity;
- use of electricity in industrial, domestic, tertiary and transport sector plants;
- industrial and electromechanical automation industry that produces components, equipment and electrical machines for industrial and civil applications and for transport.
 
Expert in the design of electrical machines and electromechanical devices  JOB ROLES:
Designer of electric machines and even innovative electromechanical devices.
Coordinator of the design.

SKILLS RELATED TO THE ROLE:
Designs and / or coordinates the design activities of the working group.
Defines the technical specifications of the machine or device.
Develops and / or uses software for computer aided design (CAD).
Coordinates the execution of the product verification activities to characterize the parameters and performance of electromechanical equipment.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:
Companies in the electromechanical industry producing components, equipment and electrical machines for industrial and civil applications, for transport, for the production, transport and distribution of electricity.  
Expert in integrated design of electrical systems   JOB ROLES:
Project manager, coordinator of working groups in the domain of electrical systems integrated design.
Safety Officer (after qualification obtained under current legislation, Legislative Decree 81/08)
Design engineer in working groups in the domain of integrated design of electrical systems and other technological systems.

SKILLS RELATED TO THE ROLE:
Organizes and directs activities of even interdisciplinary working groups for the design of electrical and technological systems in facilities of all types and sizes operating in the industrial, commercial, transport and civil infrastructure.
Works in synergy with experts with different competencies in integrated multi-functional design firms.
Interacts with the technical and administrative staff and possibly with clients.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:
Private companies or public institutions operating in the industrial, commercial, transport and civil infrastructure sectors.
 
Expert in the management of networks and electrical and energy systems   JOB ROLES:
Planner or responsible for the planning, programming and management of complex systems.
Technical director of electrical supply networks service.
Responsible for operational structures such as control centres of the national or international electrical transmission system.
Responsible for energy in the organizations in which this figure is required by law.

Builds models of electrical systems for the production, transmission, distribution and use of electricity.
Plans new electricity grids or the refurbishment of existing power grids.
Prepares and uses computer programs for the planning of electrical networks.
Identifies the optimal control strategies for the power system's operation.

Offers products, even with innovative technologies, explaining their features and uses.
Proposes and discusses with clients different plant solutions, providing guidance on the effectiveness of the system solutions in terms of costs, reliability, fuel economy and interactions with the energy markets.
