Professional profile

The graduate in Chemical engineering develops knowledge in the field of industrial production and chemistry. He/She can be empoyed in industries as well as in service field, working as a technician, planning and managing the research and the developement of new processes and systems.
Qualifying aspects
Since the chemical engineer develops a lot of knowledge, he/she can operate in different fields. He/She can work in firms, and manage their industrial processes: it is very important in our society that changes very fast.
Job opportunities
The chemical engineer can work in:

  • chemical and petrolchemical industries, producing or modifying almost every kind of stuff (plastics, pharmaceutical products, paper, etc);
  • engineering companies specialized in planning and installing industrial systems, in reliability analysis, etc;
  • research centers;
  • companies supplying industrial services (environment, energy and security);
  • companies supplying combustibles and water;
  • public bodies and companies working in the environmental field;
  • supranational bodies dealing with technological development.
    It has been shown that chemical engineers graduated from Politecnico di Torino find a lot of qualified jobs: almost 9 out of 10 graduates find a job six months after being graduated.
    Among employed graduates, almost 70% of chemical engineers have a regular job and they are professionally and economically satisfied.

    Course structure

    Topics common to all the curricula
    During the first 3 semesters lectures are basic (mathematics, physics, chemistry) and in common with Industrial Engineering. From the 2nd half of the 2nd year on, there are more specific courses.
    Specific topics
    includes environmental catalysis,chemical and environmental engineering.
    Industrial curriculum includes the study of processes, industrial testing and systems for food industry.
    Laboratory of chemical solutions, chemical engineering, analysis and simulation of industrial processes and practical exercises are parallel to the courses.
    Further activities
    Within the course some visits to industries and fire drills can be arranged.

    Final exam

    The final exam consists of a public discussion of a dissertation or of a written thesis. The final assesment of the student is a combination of the average score obtained through all courses attended during his/her academic period plus the score of the final exam.

    Master of Science (Laurea specialistica)

    After the Bachelor (Laurea di I livello) it is possible to enter the Master of Science (Laurea specialistica)in Chemical engineering.
    Master of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering
    The Master of Science gives in depth view of basic subjects. There are two avaliable curricula: Compatible Development of Projects and Product Design.
    It is in some cases possible to get a double degree in partnership with another European university.
    The job opportunities are the same as for the graduates with a Bachelor (Laurea di I livello), but with the Master of Science (Laurea specialistica) it is possible to cover higher positions.

    What is the difference between a chemical engineer and a graduate in chemistry? The chemical engineer has a basic knowledge in chemistry and an engineering mind for problem solving. The chemical engineer does not only consider chemical phenomena, but other aspects of each chemical process .
