Professional profile

A graduate in Environmental Engineering develops, manages, measures and checks systems for environmental protection, builds infrastructure - with particular attention to the environment.
He/She can deal with:

  • efficient use of minerals, oil, water and geo-environmental resources, both primary or derived;
  • analyse the environmental impact of buildings, processes, systems and products;
  • planning and construction of galleries, excavations and mining;
  • planning and managing of environmental processing and treatment;
  • evaluation of eco-compatibility of processes and recovery of contaminated areas;
    Qualifying aspects
    Property development and environmental conservation must go hand-in-hand. Italian and European laws are very careful in defining those rules. A graduate in Environmental Engineering deals with big infrastructures and their impact on the environment.
    Job opportunities
    A graduate in Environmental Engineering can be a researcher, a designer, a planner, an operator of pollution control facilities, a government regulatory agency official, a manager of programs. He/She can also be employed in private consulting engineering firms, universities, private research firms, testing laboratories or government agencies. He/She can be put on the Register of Engineers, environmental area. This course degree is completed with the Master of Science Degree (Laurea specialistica), in order to achieve higher technical skills.

    Course structure

    Topics common to all the curricula
    This course includes basic disciplines like mathematics, physics and chemistry, and some basic engineering topics such as civil or environmental negineering, and specific topics concerning environmental and building features.
    Specific topics
    Curriculum Environmental Protection gives the skills to operate in the field of analysis and managing of environmental problems. Pollution reduction, managing and monitoring of waste disposal systems and other related topics are studied in detail.
    Curriculum Geoengineering gives the skills to organize, manage and control building sites of infrastructure and other works concerning interventions on rocks and grounds. It studies in depth technologies and machines for boring.
    Curriculum Environmental protection gives the engineers skills in monitoring risks, such as rivers, artificial lakes, slopes subject to landslides, avalanches; industrial sites at medium and high risk, etc. They are experienced in assesment and cartography of areas with an high risk of diseases. They can interven in the immediate post-event in civil protection field.
    Curriculum Petroleum Engineering gives the skills to manage and produce natural reserves of hydrocarbons. It studies in depth underground oil and gasfields, on sysyems' functioning, on fluid managing, etc.
    A lot of topics include lab activities. All the labs of the DITAG (Environmental engineering) and the ones related to the Laboratorio di Alta Qualità del Politecnico (high quality lab of Politecnico) are avaliable.
    Further actvities
    Visits to building sites, extraction systems and inspections to geological interesting areas are arranged.

    Final exam

    The final exam consists of a public discussion of a dissertation or of a written thesis. The final assesment of the student is a combination of the average score obtained through all courses attended during his academic period plus the score of the final exam.

    Master of Science (Laurea specialistica)

    After the Bachelor (Laurea di I livello) it is possible to enter the Master of Science (Laurea specialistica)in Environmental engineering Master of Science Degree in Environmental engineering
    The Master of Science enhances the knowledge acquired during the Bachelor's Degree; the masters graduate can design and plan interventions on the environment and monitor geological and environmental phenomena. Its aim is to form specialized technicians.
    This master course gives skills on environment, ground, infrastructure fields, that interact with the territory.
    The graduate interacts with specialized people of other engineering fields and with public administrations on specific topics, such as:

  • systems of environmental transformation and processing;
  • characterization and reclamation of polluted sites;
  • dumps;
  • tunnels;
  • big civil and mining diggings;
  • works for reclamation and stabilization of slopes;
  • rational use of mining, water and geo-environmental resources.
    The curricula currently active are Environmental Protection, Geoengineering, Petroleum Engineering and Territorial Managing.


    What is the difference between the degree in Environlemtal Engineering and the one in Land Protection Engineering? The degree course in environmental engineering gives skills dealing with prevention, control and minimization of human pollution; with the managing of fluid and solid resouces; with digging techniques and managing of building sites. The degree course in land protection eingineering gives skills dealing with territorial analysis and techniques for the safaguard of ground and water.
    What is the difference between the degree in Environmental Engineering and the course degree in Civil Engineering? The degree course in environmental engineering gives specific skills on geology, chemistry, digging technologies and techniques. Envrionment and territory are central in this course, while the degree course in civil engineering focuses on a single activity and the environment is seen as an external part of the system.
