The first year is characterised by basic subjects in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, human sciences and English.
In addition to courses in the field of computer science and electronics, with complementary mathematics, in the second year students also study multimedia production techniques, media economics and the languages of cinema and entertainment.
The third year concentrates on topics specific to cinema engineering, incorporating instruction in telecommunications and in computer science, such as computer graphics, with courses in the field of social sciences and cross-media, advertising and communication law.
During the 3rd year students can choose to do an internship in a company. The final exam consists in preparing a dissertation.
The degree programme has a high-tech laboratory available for production, post-production and animation for digital cinema and web television. The lab offers state-of-the-art technologies for production and research in the field of digital cinema, two-dimensional and three-dimensional animation and online digital TV. The aim is to enable students to test high-profile solutions in the new digital production chain and to provide a facility for research in the area of media engineering.
The programme also has a web television, a permanent laboratory where students can practice with the most innovative forms of network communication, creating formats and testing new production solutions.
Several courses use the online platform Communio, a virtual learning community through which students have the opportunity to experiment with and learn strategies for collaborative work on specific topics.
Various seminars on up-to-date topics are organised each year.
After the degree, students are well prepared to enrol in the MSc programme in Cinema and Media Engineering.

 Career opportunities

The objective of this course is to train a professional to be able to work in the area of cinema and media by responding to the innovation processes that characterise new enterprises and new contexts of digital production. Graduates have a multidisciplinary profile based on the use of typical engineering tools as well as on the application of knowledge derived from the world of social sciences, media, cinema and marketing.
The Cinema and Communication Engineering degree programme, the only one of its kind in Italy or Europe, is unique in that it combines technological-applicative aspects with topics tied to the world of communication (a combination of a polytechnic and media education). The courses in Cinema and Communication Engineering offer an interdisciplinary approach to all the various aspects of communication: languages, the socio-economic context, the issues of enterprise, infrastructure technologies, cinematographic and media applications. This distinguishes this degree from those in Communication Sciences or DAMS, which have a more humanistic orientation.

The Cinema and Communication Engineering graduate is able to:
• plan the phases for carrying out a multimedia product and draw up a communication project (e.g. for a website, a mobile phone application, television and cinematographic formats, cross-media products);
• define a marketing plan, particularly for companies in the media sector, and identify strategies for promoting an audiovisual product (cinematographic or television);
• use systems to create user interface and 2D and 3D graphic applications, working together with clients to define the specifications and coordinate implementation of 2D and 3D graphic applications.
This kind of engineer can operate in the areas of designing, engineering and producing communication systems (cinema, television, multimedia) and information systems (Internet, computer networks, mobile phones), in the management of communication systems, in the field of business and institutional communication and in economics and marketing.

The Study program qualifies the following professional profile/s: Roles and skills:
Multimedia designer   JOB ROLES:

The multimedia designer deals with the definition of the creative idea, the design and implementation of a media communication product (website, mobile application, television and film format, cross-media product). In a position of responsibility, in addition to building the storyboard and drawing up the draft communication, the designer also coordinates the different teams involved in the development of the multimedia product. Lastly, the multimedia designer interacts with web designers, programmers, developers and other professionals such as intranet systems manager, database manager, film makers, etc.

SKILLS RELATED TO THE ROLE:

- Basic knowledge of hardware and software architecture, computer graphics, web design, 3D systems for special effects / animation, corporate communication, multimedia communication, publishing legislation, marketing and communication technologies, intellectual property protection laws (copyright).
- Ability to apply: communication need analysis, advertising conception and design techniques of multimedia products, creative thinking techniques, storyboarding techniques.
- Use of tools for prototyping and multimedia presentation.
- Knowledge and application of tools for audio and video productions.
- Ability to coordinate teams of different professionals, through effective interaction with both the creative and the technical areas.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:

The multimedia designer can work in the advertising industry, in companies that deal with software, multimedia or publishing products, and in marketing and video production.
