Description The aim of this thesis is to provide an experimental aerodynamic investigation that quantifies the turbulent fluctuations downstream of a heat exchanger installed on axial fans used for cooling thermal and electric engines in the automotive sector. The ultimate purpose of this study will be to quantify the turbulent intensity downstream of the fan, with the aim of validating or integrating numerical predictions in the Computational AeroAcoustics (CAA) field.
Following a primary literature study, the student will experimentally evaluate, using Hot-Wire Anemometry (HWA) or similar techniques, the instantaneous velocity field in some points of the gap between the heat exchanger and the fan, further investigating any effects of the distance between the radiator and the fan hub on the fan inlet velocity. Particular attention will be paid to the design of the experimental setup, which is not easy to conceive.

Required skills A good knowledge of unsteady aerodynamics, technical drawing using CAD software and, optionally, of the technologies covered in the thesis is required, obtained by attending relevant university courses or through some other documented activity (student teams or other). A good knowledge of the use of MATLAB or Python for post processing of the acquired data is also required.
