Does the average climate (average annual precipitation) influence the statistics of major rainstorms?

Description The increasing danger of extreme rainstorms is one of the effects of rising global temperatures and rising sea temperatures. The Mediterranean area is a hot-spot of these phenomena. Data collection and processing tend to look for spatial variability in the tendency of extreme rainstorms to be particularly destructive. Among the surprisingly little-investigated aspects of the relationships between the magnitude of rainstorms and the geographical characteristics of the territory is the average rainfall, which is empirically often shown to be well correlated with the averages of rainfall extremes. In order to understand the mechanisms underlying the empirical links and to be able to make better use of this characteristic as an effective descriptor of rainfall hazard, it is proposed to study the statistical links between annual rainfall totals and annual maxima (1 in 365) using the theory of probability distributions of extremes.
