Design and optimization of floating Vertical Axis Wind Turbines

Reference persons GIOVANNI BRACCO

Research Groups 14-Meccatronica e servosistemi

Thesis type NUMERICAL

Description The floating offshore wind potential has led to the design of innovative systems, able of guaranteeing good performance against a significant cost reduction. Early stage floating technologies include Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs), like the DeepWind (https://www.deepwind.eu/) and SeaTwirl concepts (https://seatwirl.com/).
The aim of the thesis involves the design of floating foundations specific for VAWTs, able to guarantee the requirements imposed by the Standards, suitably optimized to minimize the cost of the platform. Particular attention will be paid to the loads acting on the platform, which will be compared with similar systems supporting Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWTs).
For the analysis, two tools will be used: Most, an in-house code developed by Polito, and the commercial software QBlade.
