Description The friction dissipation energy in contact interface of internal combustion engines plays a strategic role on the engines efficiency. The motivation is not related to the amount of energy loss, the sum of total energy loss by friction is about 3% of all energy used to move the vehicle, but the reason comes from the direct relation between the energy dissipated by friction, the engine efficiency and the carbon dioxide vehicle emission.
The thesis proposal is focused on the modelling of friction dissipation energy by friction of contact interfaces of timing apparatus components in internal combustion engines. Examples of contact interfaces are: actuator-valve, supports-camshaft, valve-guides etc.
Each thesis will be focalized on the modeling, at different level of complexity, of a specific interface.
The study is a part of a wider research activity focused on the modelling of the entire timing apparatus and in general, friction dissipated energy. The research framework is the agreement between General Motors and Politecnico di Torino.
