Description During the past decades, composite materials have permitted the reduction of the aircraft structural weight. Recently, novel manufacturing techniques like Automated Fiber Placement (AFP), Automated Tape Laying (ATL), etc., introduced the possibility of steering fibers with a variable orientation within the single lamina, leading to the so-called Variable Angle Tow (VAT) composites. This variable orientation increases the number of design variables, but also allows to tailor the structural response with unprecedented possibilities.
In this MSc thesis, the student will investigate the non-linear response of VAT composite plates and/or shells, with a focus on the stresses that arise when large deflections are involved and that, eventually, may lead to failure onset.
