Descrizione Traditionally, automotive powertrain simulations are performed on predefined driving cycles. This approach has the advantage of repeatability, being extremely useful especially in the early stages of the vehicle development process, but it is not fully capable of representing vehicle operation in real-world conditions. Indeed, the same route can be covered with different speed profiles based on traffic conditions and driving style. The recent introduction of Real Driving Emission (RDE) testing for vehicle homologation is causing the need to develop simulation tools that are able to correctly account for this variability. The scope of this thesis is to develop a vehicular traffic model for vehicle speed profile generation. Starting from the route that the driver intends to follow, the code will simulate the vehicular traffic and the interactions of the ego-vehicle with the other vehicles, thus generating and outputting ego-vehicle’s speed profile.
After an initial phase of literature review, the selected candidate will start working on an existing version of the vehicular traffic model, based on a discrete-space formulation and featuring traffic lights and lane change maneuvers, in order to understand its functioning principles. The existing code should be expanded by implementing new features, such as precedence logic at intersections. Once a satisfactory version of the code is obtained, it should then be converted to a continuous-space formulation in order to implement a more advanced longitudinal driver model. Finally, an example of application will be investigated by using the speed profiles generated by the traffic models as inputs for an existing vehicle model in MATLAB/Simulink, analyzing how vehicle performance changes based on traffic congestion and driver’s aggressiveness.
