Description Heart rate variability (HRV) is a measure of the distribution of time between successive heart beats in the human subjects. It has been used as an indicator of the fight-or-flight response due to various stresses. Recently, it has been linked to various diseases, in particular cardiovascular diseases. Chaotic behavior found in HRV is linked to a high level of resiliance against stress and hence an indication of overall health. On the other hand, a regular pattern in the heart rate with a low level of HRV has been linked to various pathologies. In this project, we will analyze clinical data for healthy people and cancer patients and analyze the HRV differences between the two groups. A mathematical model commonly used to simulate the HRV is based on the van der Pol equation and the analysis involves the calculation of the related Lyapunov exponents. We will use these tools in the modeling effort.
