Thesis type COMPILATIVA

Description To contain global warming, the European Union intends to promote the decarbonisation of the steel industry ("The european green deal", Dec. 2019). Carbon dioxide emissions from the iron and steel industry mainly derive from fossil coal, used to produce coke. The substitution of coke is particularly difficult, because it is used not only as a source of energy, but also as a chemical reagent (or reducing agent). During the thesis, the possible ways to drastically reduce the net emissions of the steel industry will be explored, based on the revision of the current scientific literature. In particular, we will examine the possible carbon capture processes, the possible use of biomass (or charcoal) instead of coke, the direct reduction process with the use of natural gas, and the zero emission production cycle by reaction with hydrogen. For each case, sustainability and cost will also be examined.
