Thesis type EXPERIMENTAL, IN LAB
Description Ammonia, synthesized for an immense range of applications (base for fertilizers, reagent for the synthesis of nitric acid and sodium bicarbonate, component for paints, cooling fluid, production of explosives, nylon and synthetic fibers), represents an indispensable molecule for man. The production of ammonia with low-impact processes is therefore one of the main lines of research worldwide, driven above all by the growing attention to the sustainability of materials and industrial processes, which make the traditional Haber-Bosch process obsolete and absolutely to be replaced.
Chemical and materials engineering is a key discipline in this sector.
The candidate will work in the laboratories of DISAT department. The candidate will deal with the preparation of the components of the cells/reactors, their characterization, assembly of prototypes and testing under operating conditions: the advantage of this type of thesis is that the candidate has the opportunity to see an entire process of preparation of devices on laboratory scale, starting from the preparation of the individual components and assembling the cells/reactors at the end of the work.
The thesis work will be adapted according to the candidate's cultural background: chemical engineering, materials engineering, nanotechnologies. In any case, a two-week laboratory training is foreseen with the aim of putting everyone in the condition to be able to work independently on their thesis project.
Required skills The research groups "Electrochemistry" and "Catalytic reaction engineering for sustainable technologies" are two teams of internationally renowned researchers in the field of energy and innovative processes (see the recent successes of the groups at these links: https://www.facebook.com/ElectrochemistryGroupPoliTO and https://www.facebook.com/PolitoCREST). Those interested in this thesis proposed by the groups must be in possession of these requirements:
- Have a maximum of 2 exams still to be taken;
- Have an average of at least 27/30;
- Ability to work in a team;
- Autonomy;
- Knowing how to present the results (graphs, slides, reports);
- Willingness to write the thesis in English;
- Desire to work.
Notes The candidate will work on a work line currently active in the research teams, gaining the experience of working in the field of applied research in an academic laboratory.
