Thesis type THESIS W/ RES. CEN.

Description The thesis will focus, in collaboration with Computer Graphics and Vision Group (CGVG. prof. A. Bottino) and with IIT (Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Dr. G. Barresi), on the design, the implementation, and the experimental use of a virtual setting to improve/train the integration – embodiment – of a simulated upper limb in the body scheme of an individual. Such an approach is currently explored to improve the embodiment of an actual prosthetic system, a prerequisite for promoting the actual usage of the device and reducing the risk of its abandonment.

After a brief overview of the literature related to this topic, the master candidate will develop a virtual environment based on the Unity game engine for obtaining a setup for experiments of “virtual hand illusion”, collecting subjective and objective data pointing at the embodiment degree of the simulated limbs. Initially, the subjects involved in these studies will be people without impairments (evaluating their reactions as in classic literature on embodiment phenomena). However, the recruitment of amputees could become viable during these activities: if such an opportunity will be offered, the student will be free to opt for involving actual prosthetic users in the thesis work.

According to the experimental results, this thesis could lead to a scientific publication on peer-reviewed journals or conferences.
