Descrizione The thesis consists in the development of models of PV systems to simulate the energy generated and the applied policies. A photovoltaic (PV) cell is described by a current-voltage (I-V) characteristic curve, which plots, at a given temperature, the variation of I and V as a function of the irradiance G. By multiplying the values of the current axis by the voltage values, we obtain the P-V curve, whose maximum (the so-called Maximum Power Point - MPP), corresponds to the optimal (I,V) conditions for extracting power from the panel. One of the major sources of power losses in PV panels is the presence of shading conditions, induced by fixed or transient obstacles typical of urban environments. These losses are mainly due to the electrical configuration of the panel: in each series string, even a single partially shaded module limits the overall string current, thus reducing the resulting power. Half-cell is a technology used in the manufacture of photovoltaic modules with high expectation of participating in the market. The ninth edition of the International Technology Roadmap for Photovoltaic (ITRPV) predicts that the participation in the market of the half-cells will increase from 5% in 2018 to almost 40% in 2028. Conventional crystalline silicon modules have 60 to 72 cells. The half-cell modules have 120 to 144 half-cells, which improves the performance and longevity of the module, and allows to be more resilient to partial shading. The cell area directly influences the current of the cell. Therefore, when the cell is
cut in half, this half cell will be able to generate a current equivalent to half the current value of a complete cell. Due to current reduction the resistive losses become smaller, allowing the two half cells to produce a little more energy than a complete cell. Another characteristic of the half-cells is the smaller probability of cracks caused by mechanical stress due to the smaller area compared to a complete cell. The half-cell modules typically use serial-parallel-serial (SPS) connections: this type of connection allows half-cell modules to have a better response to shading, since one half of the module is not affected by the other. In addition, the SPS connection makes it possible to maintain voltage and current levels similar to the conventional modules. The goal of this thesis is to simulate (in Matlab or Python) the behavior of half-cells to estimate their behavior in the context of the construction of a PV placement by using real irradiance data obtained from GIS information. The student will have to implement the model of a half-cell, and of the complete topology including:
- a number of half cells, to compose a PV module
- a number of PV modules, to simulate a complete PV installation on the area of interest.
The thesis will include an experimental evaluation with the adoption of the developed model to estimate the behavior of a half-cell PV installation, as opposed to a full-cell installation, in the construction of an optimal placement of PV modules on a roof of interest.
