Description Most modern tech companies use design patterns to maximize the time users spend on online services like social networks and video-streaming platforms. These "attention-capture" design patterns - from the infinite scrolling mechanism to the massive use of guilty-pleasure recommendations - are common on mobile and desktop interfaces and deliberately exploit people's psychological vulnerabilities to assert control over users' behaviors and digital habits, maximizing advertisements revenue. In parallel, the notion of "digital wellbeing" - defined as the impact of digital technologies on what it means to live a life that is good for a human being in an information society - has gained interest.
This thesis aims to develop a web-based platform to support UX designers in creating Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) that prioritize digital wellbeing as a top design goal. The platform will resemble existing tools like Figma (https://www.figma.com/) and assist designers in prototyping GUIs according to pre-defined heuristics and guidelines for digital wellbeing. Specifically, it will dynamically highlight digital wellbeing problems, e.g., the presence of attention-capture design patterns, and suggest design alternatives. Operatively, the platform will be ideated and prototyped through a user-centered design approach, involving UX designers in interviews and co-design activities. The thesis will end with a preliminary evaluation of the developed tool, e.g., through a usability study.
