Description A number of thesis proposals in the areas of Computer Graphics & Virtual Reality as well as of Machine Learning & Signal Interpretation are available. The goal of these proposals will be the design of Human-Machine Interaction (HMI) techniques for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) tailored to the establishment of trust between the users and the vehicle through the creation of an appropriate level of situation awareness and the generation of the necessary perception of safety. Both users inside and outside the vehicle could be considered. Activities will encompass the a) the creation of a simulation environment based on Virtual Reality technologies, b) the development / modeling of use cases relevant for HMI in CAV scenarios, c) the implementation of components required for building situation awareness and present context information in an effective way (on infotainment systems, head-up displays, etc.), d) the development of tools for (automatically) collecting subjective/objective data about user feedback, and e) the validation of HMI techniques proposed. Activities will be carried out on the 2D Motion Driving Simulator available within the VR@POLITO lab, funded by Politecnico di Torino's Board of Governors.
