Thesis type RESEARCH THESIS

Description Multiple thesis projects are available within the context of an EU-funded project dedicated to investigating the meaning of the face in present-day digital cultures following a cross-disciplinary approach and in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. The project focuses on how users represent their identity in the digital world and in particular on social networks. Other sources of images that may be considered are images of faces in art and history, and artificial facial images generated by GANs. Within this project, activities to be carried out span from the collection of images (in compliance with GDPR) to their analysis using a variety of tools from computer vision, deep learning and visual analytics. Image analysis will be performed through the extraction of quantitative parameters and ad-hoc trained deep convolutional neural networks. Examples of quantitative parameters extracted from the facial images are presence of faces (profiles pictures may represent other types of objects), facial pose, facial landmarks, etc. An analytics platform, to be developed, will be used to characterize the distribution of image properties in space and time. The activities are expected to start in March 2021. The exact activities within each thesis will be defined based on the starting period and interactions with other members of the research team. Strong programming skills are expected. Previous knowledge of deep learning, computer vision or big data analytics are required.
