User experience with connected and autonomous vehicles in simulated, virtual reality-based environments

Reference persons FABRIZIO LAMBERTI

Research Groups GR-09 - GRAphics and INtelligent Systems - GRAINS

Description Several thesis proposals in the areas of Computer Graphics & Virtual Reality as well as of Machine Learning & Signal Interpretation are available. The goal of these proposals will be to investigate the broad design space of Human-Machine Interaction (HMI) techniques for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) tailored to the establishment of trust between the users and the vehicle through the creation of an appropriate level of situation awareness and the generation of the necessary perception of safety. Both users inside and outside the vehicle could be considered. Activities will encompass the a) the extension of a simulation environment that has been developed in previous thesis works, to increase realism and fidelity, b) the development / modeling of new use cases relevant for HMI in CAV scenarios extending those already available, c) the comparisons of virtual/simulated experiences with real ones based on subjective data about user feedback as well as on biological signals collected through wearable and external sensors. Activities will be carried out on the 2DOF Motion Driving Simulator available within the VR@POLITO lab (http://vr.polito.it), funded by Politecnico di Torino's Board of Governors.
