Thesis type RESEARCH

Description Virtual reality is progressively becoming an effective way for supporting industrial operations by allowing, e.g., to test alternative layouts for production lines, new manufacturing processes, etc. using digital models mimicking factory workers and equipment. Virtual reality can be particularly helpful in the field of assembly, maintenance and repair operations, as it could allow technicians to familiarize with procedures before they actually use them in real settings. The aim of this thesis is to develop an immersive virtual reality framework (based on Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR or HTC Vive) for evaluating industrial maintenance procedures. The possibility to move in the virtual environment and to interact with digital elements both with handheld devices and in hands-free configurations (e.g., using hand tracking technologies like the Leap Motion) will be explored.
