Advanced metrological characterisation of surface topography measuring instruments

Descrizione The characterization of functional surfaces is central for the qualification of micro- and nano-products in the manufacturing industry. Nowadays, a large choice of optical measurement equipment offers a number of advantages for areal topography measurements. Nevertheless, such instruments are to cope with the challenges of Industry 4.0, to promote offline methodologies for digitalization and Big Data analytics, but also to support the continuous development of processes, such as Additive Manufacturing techniques, which require thorough characterization and adequate assessment of the measurement uncertainty. On the other hand, limitations in the use of the optical instruments, and of the instruments themselves are, in many cases, not completely understood. Furthermore, clear indications for the calibration of optical instruments are not available, and yet, such instruments can be used in different measurement conditions, involving several uncertainty contributors.
In this context, the proposed MSc project aims to establish the traceability for individual measurement tasks, where measurement strategy and conditions are specified. Such approach is called “task related” uncertainty evaluation, and is performed by the calibration of the metrological characteristics (MCs) of an optical instrument, i.e., by the evaluation of uncertainty contributors that can be related to a specific instrument, and that can be used to establish a task related traceability.
Further work may also entail the comparison of state-of-the-art equipment, such as Coherence Scanning Interferometers, Confocal Microscopes, etc.
Note The research activity will be taken on at the Technical University of Denmark - DTU (Lyngby, DK) under the supervision of Dr. Danilo Quagliotti.
