Description Blockchain is hailed as a radically innovative technology that is set to disrupt how we govern data and exchange value in a transparent and decentralized way. The use of blockchain is also related to high shares of electricity consumption, with consequent possible negative effects on climate change-related issues. The amount of energy consumed by a blockchain or cryptocurrency network depends on its consensus mechanism, i.e. a mechanism that is used to achieve the necessary agreement on a single data value or a single state of the network among distributed processes or multi-agent systems. The aim of this thesis is to examine the currently existing framework of blockchain technologies to understand specific energy consumption levels and economic parameters, to develop a technology adoption model (based on e.g., S-curves) and to possibly include blockchain technologies in an energy system optimization modeling framework. A basic knowledge about blockchain fundamentals is desirable.
