Objective investigation of cranial rhythmic impulse for osteopathy

keywords CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM, CRANIAL RHYTHMIC IMPULSE, OSTEOPATHY

Reference persons LUCA MESIN

Research Groups Mathematical Biology and Physiology

Thesis type SIGNAL PROCESSING

Description The cranial rhythmic impulse (CRI) refers to the palpatory sensation of the widening and narrowing of the skull which is the basis of osteopathic treatment.
Previous research, mostly based on subjective measurements, suggested that the cranial bones, sacrum, dural membranes and cerebrospinal fluid function as an interrelated unit, producing the primary respiratory mechanism. Osteopathic treatment in this region aims to restore the CRI to a normal rate.
This thesis aims at providing scientific documentation of this phenomenon, taking objective measurements on blood pressure, respiration rate and CRI, testing if CRI results from an intrinsic mechanism or it is simply induced by pressure variations reflecting the activity of the cardiovascular system.

Required skills Matlab programming. Elements of Physiology. Analysis of biomedical signals.
