Description One of the key point of the Rb clock is represented by the cavity that allows the atoms to be interrogated by means of a microwave resonant at the atomic hyperfine frequency (6.834 MHz). It is important to reduce the cavity size, since it directly impacts on the volume and on the weight of the clock, two critical aspects for space applications.
To reduce the cavity size, it is possible to fill the cavity with a dielectric material, (loaded cavity).
The advantages are a reduction in size, maintaining a high quality factor and the possibility to integrate the optics inside the cavity.
The student will have to study the feasibility, simulate its behaviour considering the thermal behaviour as well as the microwave one, realize and characterize a real system.
