Description Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a novel network paradigm that permits to build highly adaptable and easily manageable networks. The main idea of SDN is to separate the control and data planes in the network: the control plane runs only in a centralized controller leaving the switching devices with only the functionality of forwarding packets. Thus, the controller has the complete view of the network and can easily implement any forwarding or dropping rule. Due to its increasing adoption, SDN is becoming the enabling technology for traffic engineering in operational networks.
To improve the scalability of the approach, a logical centralized controller is implemented through a cluster of controllers.

The thesis will be devoted to investigate stateful approaches for SDN networks, according to which some control network decisions are locally taken at each switch, in order to optimize the reactivity of the network.

Required skills C or C++ programming. Internet network protocols. Linux. Network measurements.
