Description Driven by the demand to optimize aircraft performance, decrease operating and maintenance
costs, increase reliability, and reduce gas emissions, aircraft industry's pushes toward the
concept of more electric aircraft (MEA), and ultimately to all-electric aircraft. In this regard,
flight control systems are one of the major onboard power consumers and are highly safetycritical.
Today being hydraulically powered, these systems will become electromechanical
actuators within the MEA framework.
The integration and exploitation of electromechanical actuators on the aircraft is highly
impacted by their thermal behavior. Given the high power density required in this application,
the temperature of the motor and power electronics can rapidly exceed the critical values. In
order to limit the actuator temperature, two strategies can be considered: using an appropriate
cooling and/or decreasing heat generation. Heat is mainly generated by the current in the
motor windings (copper losses) and power electronics (conduction losses). If the motor only is
considered, its current can be decreased either though motor design (mainly for steady state
operation) or control design (mainly during transient operation).
The objective of the internship is the proposal and validation of an optimal control strategy for
a brushless motor (or its equivalent DC model) that will contribute to reduce the above
mentioned energy losses.
The provisional work plan is:
 Review of the state of the art on brushless motors modeling;
 Modeling of a particular motor and parameters estimation from an existing
experimental setup;
 Review on the state of the art on optimal control strategies;
 Definition of the optimal control problem and its mathematical resolution;
 Pre-validation of the optimal control strategy by simulation of a virtual prototype;
 Validation of the optimal control strategy on the experimental setup.
