Thesis type EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH

Description Recently, there has been a significant and contentious discussion - both across research communities and on mass media - surrounding the potential drawbacks of excessive technology use, particularly concerning smartphones. In this context, HCI researchers have demonstrated that developing Digital Self-Control Tools (DSCTs), i.e., browser extensions and mobile applications that enable users to exercise control over technology use, faces technical and privacy-related challenges that undermine the effectiveness of these tools in the long term.

This thesis explores the possibility of empowering end users to autonomously develop their own digital self-control interventions, e.g., to reduce Instagram use before going to sleep, exploiting End-User Development (EUD) strategies like Trigger-Action Programming and Programming by Demonstration.

The following steps are expected:
1. An initial literature review at the intersection between research works on DSCTs and EUD.
2. The design and implementation of an EUD platform for developing and executing personalized digital self-control interventions. The platform may target smartphones, laptops, and/or multi-device environments, depending on the initial literature review, and will exploit proper metaphors and programming strategies tailored to non-technical users.
3. A preliminary evaluation of the developed platform. Such an evaluation may include a usability study, as well as a first exploratory study involving some end users.

If satisfactory, the result of the thesis will be released as an open-source project.
