Photonic technologies for theranostics in oncology

keywords FIBER OPTIC SENSORS, PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY, TUMOR LASER ABLATION

Reference persons GUIDO PERRONE, ALBERTO VALLAN

Research Groups Fibres and Optical Components

Thesis type EXPERIMENTAL, IN LAB

Description The topic is about the development and characterization of innovative devices for the diagnosis and therapy of tumors.
In this field, some theses are available on the following specific topics:
- integration of optical sensors in applicators for laser ablation of non-superficial tumors and related ex-vivo validation tests;
- development of models (also with artificial intelligence techniques) to predict the temperature distribution induced by laser light inside the tumor mass starting from point measurements obtained with optical sensors;
- study of the use of nano-particles, both to enhance the photo-thermal effect and for photo-dynamic applications (e.g., generations of radical oxygen species).
Some activities involve collaboration with research groups from other Italian and foreign universities.

Required skills Knowledge acquired in the fundamental courses of your MsC program. Depending on the specific activity considered, basic knowledge of sensors (or measurements), applied electromagnetism, photonics or thermodynamics can provide a competitive advantage.
