Description Muscle force can be produced upon the excitation of motoneurons via either voluntarily-mediated pathways or current pulses applied transcutaneously. The later possibility has been used to produce movement in people unable to voluntarily activate their muscles; that is, people with spinal cord injury. Even though there is a specific skin region where minimal stimulation leads to strongest force outputs, during movement, this region may change. Depending on how much it changes the force output may decrease below functional levels. This thesis assesses whether force changes when current pulses with fixed amplitude are delivered to target muscles during movement. Results are expected to optmise stimulation protocols currently considered for promoting lower limb exercises in paraplegia and rehabilitation of people with neural impairments.
