Thesis type THEORETICAL/EXPERIMENTAL

Description Serverless and FaaS technologies have become an important component for developing cloud-based applications, as they provide the possibility to execute stateless code independently of the underlying infrastructural layer, ease scaling out, and usage simplicity.
The thesis will address one of the following goals:
- Load balancing and data locality with multi-region Serverless and FaaS platforms: the goal is to provide an experimental and empirical evaluation of how the data locality principle of moving computation to data rather than data to computation can bring advantages in terms of performance, optimization, and load balancing, when using Serverless and FaaS platforms such as Apache OpenWhisk, OpenFaaS, Knative, Fission in a multi-region environment.
- Fog Computing for IoT devices: the goal is to experiment the use of the most common FaaS platforms for the implementation of a fog computing architecture applied to IoT contexts such as intelligent traffic control or air quality control, and compare the different possible solutions.
- Serverless Computing and FaaS Security Challenges and Orchestration: the goal is to experiment the use of the most common FaaS platforms in contexts that require orchestration and security configurations, such as the use of key vaults, and compare the different possible solutions.

The thesis will be developed within an internship in the Blue Reply Company.
